Jim joined Job Cast Radio (Internet and FM 101.9). The host reported, “Just wanted to let you know that your show this week was the most downloaded show ever. The feedback I got was that there was so much detail that people went to my site to download the show so they could take notes. Actually quite the compliment…Let me know when you want to do it again.

It was very kind of you to spend time with me yesterday. I need to emphasize to you that that hour helped me get more items in perspective than months of trying to figure out these things on my own. The name of your company is perfectly suited for what you do. If you are so inclined, I’d like to register as a patient.

…I wanted to make you aware of the most influential book in my career as a Chief Financial Officer.  I became a CFO for the first time when I was 26 years old by working my way up through the proverbial ranks very quickly.  I did so by implementing the lessons of Jim Villwock.  He has been my mentor for almost a decade now.  He wrote the quintessential career advice book entitled, “Whacked Again!”  It helps new executives move upward a rung or two on the corporate ladder and aids executives recently laid off to get back in the saddle.  It is a profound viewpoint on every job in today’s economy being more of a long-term consulting assignment, rather than society’s rose-colored glance at each job as a supposed long-term career step.  By thinking of yourself as a consultant, you constantly look to show the powers that be how much value you add, what your core competencies are and how for the employer to maximize them, you maintain constant networking, etc.

“We asked Jim Villwock to speak to a group of 300 professional job seekers at RUMC Job Networking so he could share his ideas on how to compete for a job. Jim had everyone engaged for a full 50 minutes with his solid methodology that is based on his real world experiences. We look for speakers that can work with a complete range of individuals – from Administrative Assistants to CFO’s. Jim surpassed our expectations and we hope to have him back sometime!”

…As one of those who thought he had it pretty well covered, you opened my eyes and gave me a real boost.  I had a call with a recruiter scheduled for this morning and I used some of what I learned last night during our conversation.  The call went well and your points helped get my message across.

Jim was a speaker for the Atlanta Business School Alliance’s Career Transition Seminar…   His description of the job hunting process is revolutionary compared to the usual method most people take – he helped our attendees start to understand that they need to think about themselves as a brand and decide exactly what it is they want to do for a career and develop a comprehensive marketing campaign around that one key aspect.  He explained how to effectively network – people want to help you but you have to tell them what you do best and how they can help you.  He included key points from his book and seminars that will certainly get many of our attendees on the right path to finding a job they really want to do instead of feeling at the mercy of the market and willing to take anything.  His methods require strategic forethought, effort, and confidence -  you may not feel those things now, but Jim will help you structure your plan so that you will feel prepared as each opportunity presents itself.  Even though our discussion went much longer than planned, nearly 80% of the people who attended wanted to hear more, and nearly 90% considered the content to be helpful in their job search.

Finally, a book not only for the executive in transition but any executive looking to advance their career that provides a real-world “how-to” on networking, branding (or re-branding) oneself, and making lasting connections with others.  This is not just a book but a reference tool that should be kept close by at all times.

Todd Rielly
Former Divisional President, Wachovia

This book is a powerful and practical tool in helping the executive understand who he is, what he is worth, and how to maximize his strengths in the search for the job that fulfills him.  The important lesson of the book is recognizing that is is not about your resume or what you did in the past as much as about people, you, and your own network.

Jim lays out a clear process for accurately discovering and presenting who you are, what you do, and how you can help an organization achieve its goals.  He walks you through a process of development, marketing, and sales for yourself that follows what successful companies would use to market their products or services.  Being out of work for whatever reason can be a confusing and stressful time. Whacked Again! made me slow down and approach moving on using a thorough and thoughtful process.  The extra time is well worth it!

Whacked Again! is one of the most useful and thoughtful books I have ever read about the job search process. Aimed at people who have been in executive roles, or aspire to be, there is a practical plan to win the job you really want instead of “just any job”, but more importantly to realign your business life for the next time you are “whacked”, something the author proves is very likely for most executives throughout their careers. The concept of personal brand, which is not entirely new, is treated especially well, and convinced me to make more time to make my brand visible and persistent. The use of a marketing summary instead of a resume as the door opener is brilliant, and when you think about how most people use and respond to resumes, it seems obvious. If someone reading this book is urgently in a job search mode, there is some practical help, but they will be impatient about some of the ideas, which take time to do right. Take the time. The message of network, network, network is one that executives need to heed, but more importantly I am determined to teach that to my kids, so they get “whacked” less often and end up with better jobs when they do. This is an excellent book for anyone looking, or anyone smart enough to get ready for that day when they will, inevitably, be “whacked again!”. Read this book.

Whacked Again! is an extremely valuable resource to those looking for a new opportunity and for anyone currently in a position where they lack passion. Not just theory, this provides a genuine step-by-step guide, addressing all the necessary components/techniques for repackaging yourself for a successful job search. The book makes you rethink yourself, your passion, your value to a company and your goals. Following the steps positions you to enter your search fully prepared and, more importantly, better prepared than your competition. As an executive in transition, I highly recommend Whacked Again!

They say, it is WHO you know not what you know… Since they are always right, without this book, the odds of successfully re-igniting my Finance career could be very slim.

You see, I am foreign, black and female (a minority among minorities). I am going against a tightly-knit, predominantly white and male old boys network. To add, although I am an experienced Financial Professional with an MBA in tow, I did decided to take 6 years off my career track to write fictional books…for children!!! Like that is not enough, I served for less than a year in my first come back position as a Finance Professional. Finally, although I am rather eloquent, I am also a little introverted. I have had to learn to get out of this comfort zone.

The key word here is LEARNING. Jim Villwock’s book “Whacked Again- Secrets to Getting Back on the Executive Saddle” has helped me to learn how to overcome all the above. HOW, you ask? I have used Jim’s book to develop a great resume and other self marketing documents (along with other free professional help received from local networking groups). Yes, Jim’s book did helped me learn how, when and where to network too. Finally, this book has helped me to search myself, to evoke my vision and to exude my purpose in life. Thus, it has helped me to pin point what separates me from everyone else.

Do you know what separates you from the rest?

When I land that Finance Executive position with an organization whose mission fits my purpose, I know that this book and the network I am creating, will have a lot to do with it. In short, this small but intense book will teach you how to meet the WHOs, impress them and keep them in your network. I will use this knowledge for years to come!

Just finished your book, “Whacked Again”, and enjoyed it thoroughly. When you read books with good information like this, the light bulb goes off with wow, that makes sense. I particularly enjoyed your comments re branding and needing a passion in what you are doing. If you are able to identify the points of passion within your busines as well as the areas that are pure drudgery you can take steps to improve and hopefully increase your satisfaction and bottom line. Your book is an excellent tool to sit back and reflect and then take action to improve. I will read “Whacked Again” again slowly with pen in hand and highlighter at the ready. If nothing else it certainly creates “thinking”.

Jim’s book “Whacked Again! Secrets to Getting Back on the Executive Saddle” is a most practical manual for self examination, self discovery and self portrayal not only to find just a job but to identify self worth and landing a dream job for professionals and executives alike. Jim has simplified a very complex process. The book is equally valuable for business leaders and business owners for branding technique to achieve unprecedented growth for their businesses. It is a must read for anyone. Jim is a gifted speaker, very generous and a great example of “paying it forward” practitioner. I am fortunate to have Jim as my coach, mentor and a trusted adviser.
